Quick view
Ebenezer Scrooge is the protagonist of this book, who is characterized as a mean and bitter miser. He disregards the positivity and giving spirit of Christmas, despising all people and cherishing none. On the night of his visit, Scrooge was visited by the ghost of his late business associate, who warned him that if he continued to be selfish and cruel he would be doomed to bear the chains of his guilt for eternity. This visit was also meant to serve as a final warning, as the ghost promised three more spirits would come to him that night.
The three spirits in Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol were the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present, and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. These apparitions gave Ebenezer Scrooge a glimpse of his life and how his obsession with money had cost him family values. After being scared by this revelation, Scrooge vows to turn his life around. By the end of the story, Scrooge is a much brighter person, cherishing the spirit of Christmas through the year and showing more love for his family.
I found this book to be intriguing and I can now understand the different topics covered in the book. When I was younger, I recall having read the book. Reading it again, I immensely enjoyed it. I think this book is suitable for KS2 pupils and it is linked to various subjects, such as Literacy, R.E, PHSE and History. There is an array of film adaptations of the book, with the Disney version being the most appropriate for children and something they would likely enjoy.
The story could help children to explore the importance of celebrations in their own religions/cultures, as well as those of other children. It could also help them to appreciate the values of joy and kindness that teachers strive to teach every day.
