The feedback on the article A Gentle Reminder
Reading a book like this after having the pleasure of reading “On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous” and “This is How You Lose the Time War” is a difficult task. The prose of these two books is so incredibly intricate and profound; the sentences and ideas within them are so emotionally resonant that reading them can make you want to weep simply from the sheer beauty of the words. Unfortunately, I found this book’s writing to be rather lackluster compared to them. It felt vague and repetitive at times.
Reading this book was both pleasant and easy. Its main theme was human connection, which reminded me of a conversation I had at Hippiefest a couple of years ago. An elderly lady was sitting at a table with a sign that read “Free Advice”. My dad and I joked about the sign before I decided to sit down and get some words of wisdom. We talked for half an hour, from her experiences being homeless in Texas as a child to her becoming a midwife and helping low income women deliver their children, to the loss of her life partner two years prior. I opened up to her more than I had to my closest friends and family in 16 years. We didn’t even know each other’s names. This book felt like a drawn-out version of our conversation, but it lacked the impact of the real thing. I had already been through a much more intense and intimate experience of human connection with that lady.
Three quotes from this book that resonated with me deeply are: “The only way to make a real difference in the world is to be the change you want to see.” “The only way to escape the mundanity of life is to find something worth living for.” “The only way to find true happiness is to be true to yourself.” I was deeply moved by these three quotes from this book. They have helped me to reflect on my life and to realize that I can make a difference in the world and that I should stay true to myself to find true happiness and meaning in life. By embracing these words, I can better live my life and make a positive impact on the world.
At the conclusion of the day, you should exit this life with a heart that is worn out and tender everywhere. A heart that has been battered from loving, sensing, and caring to the best of its abilities.
I hope you have the strength to forgive yourself for the actions you took to overcome your sorrow. It is not easy to move past such deep emotions, but it is possible with courage and determination. Allow yourself to be kind to yourself and celebrate the victories along the way. Your resilience is remarkable and should be honored.
When you assume that you’ll never be seen or accepted for your true self, you miss out on the chance to be truly known and to be pleasantly surprised by those who come into your life and take your heart into their hands in the way you always wished for.
Despite not being enamored with the book, I’m awarding it four stars because it reminded me of the time when I was completely exposed to a stranger, something that is not easy for anyone. The experience was unique and brought me out of my comfort zone.
