It can be confusing to know which formatting to use when writing titles; should book titles be in italics, or perhaps quotation marks or underlines are more appropriate? Even the use of plain old capital letters can add to the confusion.

It is important to consider what to do with media such as television programs, short stories, and YouTube videos.

It can be confusing trying to keep track of the different standards for various media, as each style guide has its own set of grammar rules. For instance, the Modern Language Association (MLA) has one set of regulations, the APA style another, and the Chicago Manual of Style a third. When deciding which style guide to use, it is important to familiarize yourself with the rules and follow them accordingly.

It appears that the main three writing styles, MLA, APA, and Chicago, have a lot of similarities when it comes to using italics. Let’s find out more about this topic, shall we?

One Rule of Writing Titles

There are two ways we typically indicate titles: by italicizingIt is important to remember the core principle that when using words from another source, you must either attribute them to the original author, or use quotation marks to set them apart. We will take a closer look at the details of each approach in a moment.

Italicize the titles of works that are larger, like the titles of books, albums, and movies. For shorter works, like a journal article title, song title, or a poem title, use quotation marks.

For example, you would italicize the name of the book, like Harry Potter and the Chamber of SecretsThe book “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” contains a variety of interesting chapters, such as “The Worst Birthday” and “Mudbloods and Murmurs”. These chapters capture the attention of readers and provide an intriguing story.

When it comes to media such as books, the rules for titles are well-defined. On the other hand, the rules for YouTube videos may be a little more difficult to discern.

Whatever kind of mediaExamine the work you are working with using this principle: emphasize large works by using italics, and use quotation marks for small or shorter works.

The following principle can help you handle any unknown situations like an expert.

Do You Underline Titles? And Other Ways to Indicate Titles

In earlier times, italics were not used to differentiate titles. Instead, titles of longer works were underlined as it was difficult to write in italics by hand. In spite of this difficulty, underlining titles on handwritten documents is still an acceptable way to denote titles.

As our methods of communication advance, so do our approaches to displaying titles. For example, if you are creating a post on Facebook, there is no way to italicize or underline it. In these cases, many individuals utilize ALL CAPS to indicate names of longer works.

Be Clear and Consistent

It is essential to be aware that all of the rules concerning italicizing and putting words in quotation marks are ultimately arbitrary. Various style guides have distinct interpretations of what should and should not be done. If you are creating something formal, it is essential to check the style guide to make sure you are following the right guidelines.

It is essential to be mindful that the primary goal of these guidelines is to make the writer’s ideas comprehensible for the reader. Are book titles supposed to be italicized? Whatever the content is, whether it is a dissertation or a tweet, make sure to be consistent and transparent when indicating titles.
