As the second largest earth dam, Summersville Dam is a 390-foot fortress of rock and dirt. Visitors can enjoy views of its pipes releasing water into Summersville Lake. As a result, the lake has optimum conditions for scuba diving.

The site of an important Civil War battle on September 10, 1861, the Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park pays tribute to the events of that night. Approximately every other year, the battle is reenacted, while at other times, visitors can see historical artifacts in the Patterson House Museum.
