Steps to an Organized Closet

The way you organize your wardrobe is a bit different depending on how much space you have, the size of your closet, and your lifestyle. However, these seven universal steps can be applied to any closet and closet:

  1. Gather your wardrobe organizers, including “throwaway” baskets and tape measure .
  2. Empty all the furniture in the closet: clothes, shoes, lockers, etc.
  3. Clean out your closet.
  4. Clear out your closet and donate, recycle or sell the clothes, shoes and accessories you no longer need.
  5. Evaluate your storage solutions to make sure they fit into your closet space and match your clothes, shoes, and accessories.
  6. Organize the clothes, shoes and accessories in your closet by grouping similar items together and moving your oldest pieces into the most accessible part of your closet.
  7. Plan to organize your closet so it never becomes a breeding ground for clutter again.

What You Need to Organize Your Closet

The first step to organizing your wardrobe is to make sure you have the right tools and supplies on hand before diving. wanted to start this project after a long day of work. Organizing your closet for the long haul requires a little preparation and finding a time in your calendar when you have two to three hours to commit to the process. (There are other smaller organizing projects you can do with less time.)
  • Shopping bags: If you don’t have bags, boxes and trash cans will be difficult.
  • Tape measure: measure shelves and wardrobes. Don’t forget a notebook to record your wardrobe measurements.
  • Full-length mirror:  To decide between “transmit” and “hold,” make sure the mirror can hold your entire image.
  • Tote Basket: Includes change, papers, rubber bands, hairpins, cash packs (scores!) and all sorts of receipts you’ll find in your pocket. You don’t want to have to stop halfway to stack these small items, so put them aside right in your tote basket.
Also, think ahead of time about what you’re going to do with the clothing you decide to get rid of. You have three options: donate, deposit or discard. Try to donate and deposit as much as possible, while the trash is only for items that cannot be repaired/used.

Empty and Clean Your Closet

If you’re used to putting your clothes in the closet, this gets weird, because you’re about to pull it all out and might find some stuff tucked into a back corner that you forgot about. Remove everything from the closet, including hangers, baskets, trash cans, and anything that might sit on the floor or shelves. You need a clear and clean space to plan and visualize how you will rearrange your wardrobe. First, dust the shelves and hangers. Then vacuum or sweep and mop the floor. Finally, clean the shelves, hangers, walls and baseboards with an all-purpose cleaner. Don’t forget baskets or bins that can accumulate dirt.

Declutter Your Clothes, Shoes, and Accessories

Some people are afraid of declarations because they like to keep things that they “may need someday” or “use to fit/trendy”. Focusing on what to keep rather than what to get rid of – an important part of the KonMari method of organizing.
  • Hold: Hold onto whatever you love and wear often.
  • Guide: To sell your clothes, shoes and accessories, they must be in good condition. Most consignment stores prefer these to be well-known brands.
  • Donate: These items must be in good condition. Think “mildly used” when adding to this pile.
  • Garbage: Disposable clothing includes anything that is stained, torn, out of date beyond repair, or anything you feel embarrassed about donating.

When trying to decide whether to keep something, you should ask yourself the following questions:
  • Do you like it?
  • Do you wear it?
  • Does it project the image you want to portray?
If the answer is “yes” to all three questions, you can confidently place this item in the goalkeeper line. If you’re having problems, create a “maybe” stack. Maybe put your husband in the trash and come back one, three or six months later. If you forget these items or never think to wear them, you can donate or deposit them with confidence.

Purchase Closet Organizers

Finding the right wardrobe storage solutions for your particular space can be difficult. Fortunately, there are many great options for closet organizers, including wardrobe system kits, but most people can skip installing a few cabinet organizers, cheap clothes.

Closet Storage Tips

Wardrobe storage solutions that won’t create extra space in your closet; However, closet organizers, storage solutions and closet systems can help you get more storage space. Example:
  • A trolley will give you easier access to the top shelves of the closet.
  • Double hanging system makes better use of horizontal storage space in the closet.
  • Door shoe racks can turn your entryway into the perfect place to store shoes, accessories, or both.
You may be tempted to give up, pull out a credit card, and buy an expensive wardrobe system. Resist this urge. Measure the space, assess what you already have, then plan your wardrobe accordingly. Buy only what you need to store your clothes and reuse what you already have, if possible. Bookcases, lockers and small baskets are great for storing purses, shoes, accessories and sportswear. Finally, don’t forget to measure the space three times before purchasing a new storage object. There’s nothing worse than bringing something home and finding it a little too big. Think about where you should store each piece of clothing, then think about the easiest places in your closet.

Organize Your Clothes, Shoes, and Accessories

Now arrange everything together in a way that works for you, uses all your available space and is attractive enough to promote wardrobe maintenance. Think about where you should store each piece of clothing, then think about the easiest places in your closet.
  • Groups such as: Sets of belts, sweaters, long-sleeved shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc. and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g. in a closet, folding and stacking sweaters in the office). Working in groups of items will help you determine how much space you need and the best way to store each item.
  • Use the main real estate correctly: Dedicate the front and center of your closet to the clothes you wear most often. If you have to get dressed for work every morning at 6 a.m., make sure your work clothes are in the front of the closet. Less worn items such as formal and off-season clothing should be stored in the back and on higher shelves.
  • Store Less Used Items: Use the top of your wardrobe for out-of-season items and items you only wear a few times a year, such as Halloween costumes and pairs. Super fancy shoes.

Accessories and shoes should be stored separately from your clothes (e.g. don’t combine scarves with sweaters), but keep the main real estate rule in mind. If you wear a pair of shoes all the time, don’t put them in the back closet. Go through your closet and do a quick clean once a month, and tackle the whole rearranging process twice a year.

Maintaining Your Newly Organized Closet

Make your job easier by following a cleaning schedule, by season, by day (like your birthday or new year), or by event. The next time you can’t find an important piece, it’s a good sign that you need to revamp your wardrobe.
