Outlander Books in Order: Full Length Novels

Outlander (1991)

Claire Randall, a former British combat nurse, finds herself transported through time from the Scottish Highlands in 1945 to the year 1743. In this tumultuous era of war and clan conflicts, Claire becomes an “outlander,” a stranger in a dangerous land. As she navigates this unfamiliar world, Claire becomes entangled in the political intrigues and struggles for survival. She soon encounters Jamie Fraser, a brave and honorable Scottish warrior, and their fates become intertwined.

Amidst danger, passion, and violence, Claire finds herself torn between her life in the present and her growing connection to Jamie. As she learns to adapt to the ways of the 18th century, Claire discovers that her only chance of safety and survival lies with Jamie. Their initial encounter develops into an urgent need, and Claire is caught between her loyalty to her husband from the future and her deepening love for Jamie.

In this tale of compelling compulsion and heart-wrenching choices, Claire must navigate the complexities of two irreconcilable lives and decide where her loyalties truly lie. The story explores the power of love, the clash of cultures, and the lengths one person will go to protect those they care about in a world of treachery and uncertainty.

Dragonfly in Amber (1992)

For twenty years Claire Randall has kept her secrets. But now she is returning with her grown daughter to the majesty of Scotland’s mist-shrouded hills. Here Claire plans to reveal a truth as stunning as the events that gave it birth: about the mystery of an ancient circle of standing stones, about a love that transcends the boundaries of time, and about James Fraser, a warrior whose gallantry once drew the young Claire from the security of her century to the dangers of his.

Now a legacy of blood and desire will test her beautiful daughter as Claire’s spellbinding journey continues in the intrigue-ridden court of Charles Edward Stuart, in a race to thwart a doomed uprising, and in a desperate fight to save both the child and the man she loves.

Jamie Fraser miraculously survives the devastating battle of Culloden, but his existence becomes a living hell. Despite his own wounds and the plight of his fallen comrades, Jamie’s sole concern is for the safety of his wife, Claire, and their unborn child. Desperate, he prays fervently that Claire made it back through the mystical standing stones to her own time, praying for her and their child’s well-being. Over the next two decades, Jamie continues to utter this prayer, hoping against hope that Claire found her way back to safety.

Meanwhile, Claire has indeed returned to her own time, believing Jamie to be dead. Struggling to live without her heart and soul, she finds solace in their daughter, Brianna. However, everything changes when Claire discovers that Jamie has survived. Faced with an agonizing choice, she must decide whether to stay with her beloved daughter or venture back into Scotland’s perilous past in search of Jamie. Her only sustenance is the hope that they will recognize each other and find their love intact if she can locate him.

What if you knew someone you loved was going to die? What if you thought you could save them? How much would you risk to try?

Claire Randall has gone to find Jamie Fraser, the man she loved more than life, and has left half her heart behind with their daughter, Brianna. Claire gave up Jamie to save Brianna, and now Bree has sent her mother back to the mysterious Scottish warrior who was willing to give his life to save them both. But a chilling discovery in the pages of history suggests that Jamie and Claire’s story doesn’t have a happy ending.

Brianna dares a terrifying leap into the unknown in search of her mother and the father she has never met, risking her own future to try to change history . . . and to save their lives. But as Brianna plunges into an uncharted wilderness, a heartbreaking encounter may strand her forever in the past . . . or root her in the place she should be, where her heart and soul belong.

The Fiery Cross (2001)

In 1771, Jamie Fraser’s wife, Claire, reveals to him a chilling prophecy of an impending war. Although reluctant to believe it, Jamie is compelled to trust her, knowing her gift as a time-traveler grants her certain knowledge of the future. Claire, originally from 1918, had stumbled upon a magical portal in the Scottish Highlands that transported her to 1743, a time when English presence in Scotland was met with hostility.

Now a wife, mother, and surgeon, Claire remains an outlander, forever displaced and disconnected from her own time. However, her deep love for Jamie keeps her anchored to him by choice. Claire’s extraordinary ability to foresee the future has brought both danger and salvation to Jamie in the past, and her knowledge of the approaching revolution becomes a flickering beacon that could guide them through the perilous years to come. Yet, it also has the potential to ignite a destructive inferno that could leave their lives in ruins.

A Breath of Snow and Ashes (2005)

In the year 1772, as tensions rise on the eve of the American Revolution, chaos and violence grip the colonies. In Boston, the streets are stained with blood, while in the remote forests of North Carolina, cabins burn in flames. Sensing the impending rebellion, the governor turns to Jamie Fraser for assistance in uniting the backcountry and protecting the colony in the name of the King and Crown.

However, Jamie’s wife, Claire, possesses knowledge of the future, and she reveals to him that in three years’ time, the shot that ignites the war for independence will be fired. She predicts that loyalists to the King, like Jamie, will face death or exile. Furthermore, a newspaper clipping from 1776 foretells Jamie’s own demise along with that of his family. Hoping against hope, Jamie yearns for his family’s predictions to be inaccurate, for once challenging the accuracy of their time-traveling abilities and seeking to defy the fate that awaits him. As the couple navigates the treacherous political landscape and fights to protect their loved ones, they confront the uncertainty of the future and the sacrifices they must make to shape their own destiny.

An Echo in the Bone (2009)

Jamie Fraser, former Jacobite and reluctant rebel, is already certain of three things about the American rebellion: The Americans will win, fighting on the side of victory is no guarantee of survival, and he’d rather die than have to face his illegitimate son–a young lieutenant in the British army–across the barrel of a gun.

Claire Randall knows that the Americans will win, too, but not what the ultimate price may be. That price won’t include Jamie’s life or his happiness, though–not if she has anything to say about it.

Meanwhile, in the relative safety of the twentieth century, Jamie and Claire’s daughter, Brianna, and her husband, Roger MacKenzie, have resettled in a historic Scottish home where, across a chasm of two centuries, the unfolding drama of Brianna’s parents’ story comes to life through Claire’s letters. The fragile pages reveal Claire’s love for battle-scarred Jamie Fraser and their flight from North Carolina to the high seas, where they encounter privateers and ocean battles–as Brianna and Roger search for clues not only to Claire’s fate but to their own. Because the future of the MacKenzie family in the Highlands is mysteriously, irrevocably, and intimately entwined with life and death in war-torn colonial America.

Written in My Own Heart’s Blood (2014)

1778: France declares war on Great Britain, the British army leaves Philadelphia, and George Washington’s troops leave Valley Forge in pursuit. At this moment, Jamie Fraser returns from a presumed watery grave to discover that his best friend has married his wife, his illegitimate son has discovered (to his horror) who his father really is, and his beloved nephew, Ian, wants to marry a Quaker. Meanwhile, Jamie’s wife, Claire Randall, and his sister, Jenny, are busy picking up the pieces.

The Frasers can only be thankful that their daughter Brianna and her family are safe in twentieth-century Scotland. Or not. In fact, Brianna is searching for her own son, who was kidnapped by a man determined to learn her family’s secrets. Her husband, Roger, has ventured into the past in search of the missing boy . . . never suspecting that the object of his quest has not left the present. Now, with Roger out of the way, the kidnapper can focus on his true target: Brianna herself.

Go Tell The Bees That I Am Gone (2021)

Jamie Fraser and Claire Randall were torn apart by the Jacobite Rising in 1746, and it took them twenty years of loss and heartbreak to find each other again. Now it’s 1779, and Claire and Jamie are finally reunited with their daughter, Brianna, her husband, Roger, and their children, and are rebuilding their home on Fraser’s Ridge–a fortress that may shelter them against the winds of war as well as weather.

But tensions in the Colonies are great: Battles rage from New York to Georgia and, even in the mountains of the backcountry, feelings run hot enough to boil Hell’s teakettle. Jamie knows that loyalties among his tenants are split and it won’t be long before the war is on his doorstep.

Brianna and Roger have their own worry: that the dangers that provoked their escape from the twentieth century might catch up to them. Sometimes they question whether risking the perils of the 1700s–among them disease, starvation, and an impending war–was indeed the safer choice for their family.

Not so far away, young William Ransom is coming to terms with the mysteries of his identity, his future, and the family he’s never known. His erstwhile father, Lord John Grey, has reconciliations to make and dangers to meet on his son’s behalf and on his own, and far to the north, Young Ian Murray fights his own battle between past and future, and the two women he’s loved.

Meanwhile, the Revolutionary War creeps ever closer to Fraser’s Ridge. Jamie sharpens his sword, while Claire whets her surgeon’s blade: It is a time for steel.
