The comment on the article Prince Harry and Meghan: Where do they get their money?
Quick view
Up until last year, Harry’s father, the Prince of Wales, covered the majority of the expenses associated with their royal duties, including staff and travel, through the Duchy of Cornwall, which Forbes estimates amounted to about $800,000 a year. The Crown paid for more than $3 million for renovations underway at Frogmore Cottage before it became their family home in the U.K. They voluntarily repaid the sum in September with a contribution to the Sovereign Grant.
That’s left them with the progressive new life they want but also the kind financial uncertainty—a former royal’s version of it, at least—of recent college graduates who’ve just left home to embark on the independence of adulthood. His older brother and future king, Prince William, covers expenses with help from the Duchy of Cornwall, which in the last fiscal year spent about $8 million to support the public, charitable and personal activities of Prince Charles and his immediate family.
Prince Harry spoke about his withdrawal from official Royal duties with fellow Brit James Corden on The Late Late Show yesterday—a week after Buckingham Palace released a statement—but he took issue with Corden’s depiction of him “walking away” from the family. “It was never walking away; it was stepping back rather than stepping down,” said the Duke, saying he decided to leave to escape a relentless press. “We all know what the British press can be like and it was destroying my mental health. This is toxic. So I did what any husband, what any father, would do. I need to get my family out of here.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have lived in the US since stepping down as working royals, in 2020.
Prince Harry and Meghan no longer receive money from the Royal Family and have a series of commercial arrangements with a number of companies.
Why did Harry and Meghan leave the Royal Family?
Harry and Meghan met in 2016 and married in 2018. They stepped down as senior royals in January 2020.
The couple were angry about media intrusion, and frustrated that Buckingham Palace stopped them developing their “SussexRoyal” brand.
Harry remained a Prince, and the couple kept their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles, but are no longer addressed as His/Her Royal Highness (HRH). He also gave up his military titles and no longer wears army uniform in public.
When Prince Harry’s father, Charles, became King, the couple’s children became Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet of Sussex.

Harry’s memoir, Spare, was officially published in January – but much of the book’s content leaked in advance, including the claim he was physically attacked by his brother, the Prince of Wales.
Written in conjunction with JR Moehringer, the book also discusses his grief over the death of his mother, Princess Diana, and says he and William urged their father not to marry his partner, Camilla, now the Queen.

What did Prince Harry and Meghan lose when they stepped down?
A
As working Royals, they received 95% of their annual income from Harry’s father, then Prince of Wales.
In the financial year 2018-2019 (the first year of their marriage), Charles’ Duchy of Cornwall estate paid more than £5m to cover the public duties – and some private expenses – of the Sussexes, and of Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales.

Charles subsequently gave them “a substantial sum” to support their transition to financial independence.
Duchy of Cornwall accounts show that the couple – along with Prince William and Catherine – received £4.5m between April and June 2020.

Once they stepped back from official duties, the Duke and Duchess were no longer covered by the security arrangements in place for senior royals.
When Harry first left the UK, he said it would be too dangerous to bring back his family without police protection.
In July 2022, he was granted permission to challenge its removal at the High Court.
That case is continuing – but in May, a judge separately rejected the prince’s request to be allowed pay privately for police protection in the UK.

The Queen gave Frogmore Cottage in Windsor to Harry and Meghan when they got married in 2018.
The Crown Estate paid for renovations costing £2.4m, which the couple repaid when they stepped down.
They retained the cottage as their UK residence, and celebrated their daughter Lilibet’s first birthday there in 2022.
However, in early 2023, Buckingham Palace asked the couple to leave the property.
The Sun newspaper reported that the request was made shortly after Harry’s memoir was published, and that the cottage had been offered to his uncle, the Duke of York.
William and Harry received the bulk of Princess Diana’s £13m fortune when their mother died in 1997.
Harry told Oprah Winfrey this inheritance funded the US move: “I’ve got what my mum left me. Without that, we wouldn’t have been able to do this.”

Harry is also thought to have inherited millions from his great-grandmother, the Queen Mother.
During her acting career, the Duchess of Sussex was reportedly paid $50,000 for each episode of the legal drama Suits. She appeared in more than 100 episodes.
Ms Markle also ran a lifestyle blog, and designed items for a Canadian fashion brand.
