This is a story of a girl who created another life for herself. This is a story of people reaching out for each other. This is a story of creating friendships that last beyond distance. This is a story of loneliness, pain and misery. This is a story of knowing that you aren’t alone. This is a story of the people in the shadows. This is a story embracing who you are and accepting your life. This is a story of friendship, hope, care and perhaps most importantly, being there for everyone, including yourself. This is a story, that is a reality.
I can’t emphasize enough on how deep this book touched me.Thought I don’t have really bad social anxiety, I could understand Vicky. I understood how she felt, like a small drop, in a huge ocean. All alone, wanting to be overlooked, yet wishing for acknowledgement of herself.
This book is like glass piercing my soul. Painful and harsh but so very real. All the characters are so real and human. The way they hid their problems under a smile, the elegant way they held themselves, only to slump when no one watched. It felt all too real.
Think about this:-How often do we stop by to greet a person hidden in the shadows.-How often do we think about the problems even the most popular people have.-How often to we overlook all the tiny flaws in people, taking them and their friendship with us for granted.-How often do we ignore the silent helpers. Whomever they may be, perhaps it’s the watchman, or your driver. Maybe it’s a person who just helped you carry your luggage.-How often do we overlook the people in the background, dismissing them as unimportant and not bothering to think about the problems they face.
This book takes the quiet, socially awkward kids in school and makes them the protagonist. Makes them sSharon Huss Roat has taken the people from the shadows and given them the light. It is done in a slow gentle way, not fast and unreal. She breathes life into all of her characters, making them three dimensional with all too real problems and letting us relate to them.Everyone felt like sI came to care about all of the characters: Vicky, Lipton, Adam, Marissa, Halie, Adrian, Adam, Jenney, Beth-Ann, Marvo, Jermey and all of those people online.
From page 117 onwards this book really began to touch me. From then I realised that this book would stay with me forever. The amount of post-its I’ve stuck is ridicules, but that’s how much I loved the the scenes in the book.(And yes I’m probably overhyping this book but underlying point, just read it guys)
Also, if you’ve depression you should probably read this book with someone. But please, everyone, read this book. It’s amazing and it touched my heart.

25th Feb 2021 original review:Wow, just wow. This book shattered me. This is a book that everyone should read. It’s beautiful. It doesn’t matter whether you blend in the shadows or are the popular kid in class, this book is for everyone. How To Disappear is a wonderful, emotional story about a girl who creates another version of herself on social media. It shows how everything online affects you, in a good way or a bad way. It’s a story of everyone reaching out to each other. This isn’t the kind of book whose plot grips you, I think it’s a book that lingers in your mind and affects you deeply. So, if you haven’t read this, please do.And everyone out there, #youarewanted
