This simple method translates your child’s words and/or illustrations onto pages of a book to help self-publish your kid’s first book!

I am elated to present this tutorial to everyone. Reading has always been something I am passionate about; since I was a young girl, I was always engrossed in a book. I still love story telling and reading now and I am determined to pass along my adoration of reading to my children. I plan to do this by reading to them often and asking them to create their own stories.

It has been a remarkable experience to observe my daughter learning to read. She has been revisiting her old books and deciphers the words, while making connections to the narrative. It’s truly captivating!

In order to nurture her enthusiasm for storytelling and reading, we opted to make her own book. Keep reading to discover how enjoyable this can be for kids, and also how it can have a powerful effect on inspiring a child’s imagination into something they can be proud of and cherish.

READ PAST THIS SIMPLE TUTORIAL DOWN BELOW TO SEE HOW WE RECENTLY DID A MORE INVOLVED VERSION FOR MY 10 YEAR OLD SON!

How To Publish Your Child’s First Book – Materials:

– Paper and colored pencils/crayons or markers

– A camera (it doesn’t have to be a fancy one, this is just to capture a shot of each illustrated page)

Steps:

Lead your kid in creating their own characters. For example, I asked my daughter which characters she wanted to create. She replied that she wanted to make a diamond and a heart shape. Then I asked her what they should be named and she said “Diamey” and “Hearty”.

I had my daughter come up with an idea for what Diamey and Heartey would do in the story. She suggested they go to San Francisco, which is the city we are from. After that, I created storyboards for each page of the story.

Once the characters and framework of the story (in this case, going to San Francisco) are established, parents can guide their children and ask them to think of specific activities that the characters will be engaging in. We came up with the ideas for each adventure one at a time, creating a storyboard for each one.

Encourage your child to create a picture for each page of their journey. Diamey and Hearty have been experiencing lots of fun activities such as crossing the Golden Gate Bridge, visiting the beach, indulging in ice cream, and releasing balloons. My daughter thought of all these amazing ideas, which just so happen to be things she loves to do with her brother.

It is perfectly acceptable to offer assistance with more complex illustrations. For instance, when creating an image of the Golden Gate bridge, we referred to a photograph on the internet and I outlined the bridge in pencil so that my daughter could color it.

5. Once you have your illustrations, take a photo of each page. Using a photo editing software like Photoshop (or a free one like CanvaThis HTML paragraph features an illustration of an owl: This illustration of an owl is striking and captivating. It features a wide-eyed owl with a large, round face and a detailed, intricate feather pattern. The artist has expertly captured the owl’s alertness and cunningness in a single image.

Help your child create their own story by guiding them through each page. Listen to their ideas and jot them down, as it is their story to tell, but you can assist in capturing it on paper.

7. The photo above shows the illustrated pages with text. Once you have saved each of these as an image, you can use any type of photo book creator to make a book. We used ShutterflyCreating a photo book with the online photo book maker is straightforward and the quality is excellent for the price. There are many other ways to make a photo book online, so you have lots of choices.

Making the book personal was really enjoyable. We even included a “About the Author” section at the end. On the last page, there is a picture of my children with the caption “The Real Diamey and Hearty”, which is a reference to characters in the story. My kids always have a good laugh when they see it.

I was astonished to witness the transformation of my daughter’s drawings into an actual book. She was overjoyed and beaming with pride.

My sister loves to read the book from start to finish and especially enjoys sharing it with her brother. We also took the book to her school and she read it to her peers.

This book has become our go-to for bedtime reading and I’m sure we’ll treasure it for a long time to come.

What are some enjoyable methods to promote story telling and reading with your kids?

UPDATED 4/22/21 – WE PUBLISHED A SECOND BOOK WITH MY NOW 10 YEAR OLD SON!

We created a second book to surprise my son for his 10th birthday. In this updated version, we actually hired an affordable illustrator on FiverrMy son is currently at an age where his imagination is incredibly expansive and he can create a plethora of unique characters and storylines. This example is perfect for younger children to make more of a “picture book” with simple text and sketches.

In this example, the process may be slightly different but follows a similar pattern.

Check out the video in this post to see the steps to publish your kid’s first book.

Step 1. Ask your child to tell you a story. You may want to do this over several days and stop only when your child feels the story is complete.

Step 2. As they are telling the story, type away their words on a computer, or laptop so you can capture their story. Some may ask why I didn’t ask for him to type it himself. My intent was for my son to tell a story freely with no bounds and restrictions for correct grammar, spelling or book structure. This was all about encouraging his imagination and love for story telling.

Step 3. Once the words were on paper, I showed them to an amazing illustrator on Fiverr and she created 8 key scenes from the book. Ruxandra is someone I’ve worked with for years to create graphics for my blog and I cannot recommend her services highly enough! She provided digital illustrations. Note ff your child loves to draw or illustrate they can do this part themselves. However, my son isn’t into illustrating as much as story telling so I didn’t make that a focus for his book.

Step 4. Like the picture book example above with my daughter, we used Shutterfly’s photo book template to create the book. We simply dropped in the text and digital illustrations!

Step 5. As an additional gift, I also used Shutterfly’s wall art service to print out them out and then framed them so I could place them on the wall as an additional reminder of his amazing book!

I was delighted when my son received this thoughtful gift and even more so knowing that it will remind him of his remarkable creativity and narrative abilities.
