2. Write and draw every day

Whether you’re writing or you’re illustrating, all stories are born from hours and hours of practice. One of our favorite Blurb children’s books, Animals Under the BedMeg Smiley embarked on a self-imposed challenge to paint animals for 100 days. As she progressed, the animals began to take shape and form a story. Though not all of the characters, tales, and lines she wrote ended up in the finished book, it was not a futile exercise. It served to keep her creativity flowing, and the habit of creating is just as beneficial for making a children’s book as the content itself. Writing towards the project is not essential – simply keeping pencils and pens moving is enough.

3. Read a lot of children’s books

To create a successful children’s book, it is important to understand the rhythm, formula and style used by other successful books in the genre. Pay attention to how the stories progress and how characters are typically portrayed. To gain a better understanding of the target audience, it is important to observe and explore the various genres, in order to identify the elements that work well in a story and the ones that don’t. When crafting your tale, consider the setting in which it will take place and develop it in detail. Create a list of possible plot points and events. Alternatively, if you’re writing a non-fiction book for a young reader, consider how you can make the topic interesting and enjoyable to explore.

6. Decide on an age group

Before you thought about who would be reading your story, you likely had an idea for a story and a character. It is important to decide who the intended audience is and make sure the story and characters are appropriate for that age group. Children’s books can be categorized into the following age groups:

• Picture books (ages 3-5) up to 500 words
• Picture books (ages 4-8) up to 800 words. These can be fiction or non-fiction

8. Play with your characters in different scenarios

When writing a nonfiction book, it can be helpful to create a character that readers can relate to.
