Ever since the sci-fi horror mystery-thriller SSince it premiered on Netflix back in July 2016, multiple conspiracy theories about the show being based on real events have circulated on the internet. So, for everyone asking “Is Stranger Things based on a true story?” the answer is “Yes”. However, the Duffer Brothers series is not entirely based on a true story and is loosely inspired by real-life events. In fact, the show was originally going to be called the Montauk Project, taking its cues from the highly-controversial Montauk Project.

For the unversed, the Montauk Project is a long-held conspiracy theory that suggested that the US military had conducted experiments on children in Montauk back in the ’80s. In a 2017 interview with Wired, SActor Gaten Matarazzo has revealed that the sci-fi thriller series “Stranger Things” is based on a place in Montauk, New York called “Camp Hero.” Elaborating further, Gaten said there were rumors of the US military conducting human experiments during the Cold War, and the show is based on “that one government lab.” He went on to explain that the series is set in a fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, which is inspired by the real-life location of Montauk.

True believers assert that mind-control experiments, conducted by the U.S. military, took place at the Montauk Air Force Station and Camp Hero. Preston B. Nichols, an alleged abductee of these experiments, wrote a book about his experience, titled “The Montauk Project: Experiments in Time”. The book details the purported experiments, which were conducted with the intent of furthering psychological warfare research.

The book that started it all, Montauk, was originally published in 1992. It spawned a series of books that explored the conspiracy theory of the Montauk Project. While the Montauk Project is considered an urban legend, the CIA did conduct a similar program called ‘Project MKUltra.’ This program was designed to explore the possibilities of mind control through the use of drugs, and was conducted in conjunction with the U.S. Army Biological Warfare Laboratories.
