Welcome to Hodges Gardens.

What happened to these amazing, once-popular gardens? How did they go from being a welcoming oasis to an exiled, yet still stunning forbidden realm, enclosed by fences and gates, locked and sealed, and posted with menacing “No Trespassing” signs at every possible access point? Let’s start from the beginning.

Hodges Gardens are located in what was once historically known as “The Neutral Strip”, a demilitarized zone that developed due to a border dispute between the United States and the Province of Texas from 1806-1822. The land was deemed “neutral” until its actual ownership could be determined by the respective governments, and the void in power here meant that the area quickly found itself infested with outlaws and fugitives.

In the late 1800’s, the railroad brought lumberjacks and the timber industry, and with them, a ruthless deforestation. As a matter of fact, just three decades later, the local forests were left stripped bare and virtually worthless, forcing the sawmills out.

This is where the original founder of the Hodge’s Gardens, A.J. Hodges (left) came in.

A.J. Hodges’ became known as the “Father of Forestry in Northwest Louisiana” and his progressive thinking and dedication to conservation led him to establish experimental research areas on the acreage that included a conservatory and greenhouse complex, arboretum and a 225-acre lake. Mr. Hodges believed that, with proper land and timber management, for every mature tree that was removed, 2 more could take its place.

But this area soon became much more than an effort at conservation. Soon, flowers were planted, walkways were laid, and foot-bridges were built. Streams, waterfalls and fountains were created to further enhance the garden’s overall beauty. What had begun as an experiment in ecological preservation was gradually becoming a full-on paradise!

All in all, it took a total of 7 years to complete Hodges Gardens, with Mr. Hodges involved in every aspect. A.J. Hodges and his wife opened the gardens to the public in 1957. This was the beginning of a new industry in Sabine Parish -tourism- which was augmented with the completion of Toledo (Tuh-Lee-Doe) Bend Reservoir in 1968.

When the administrators of Hodges Gardens, which cost about $1 million a year to run, began facing financial difficulties, they signed an agreement with the State of Louisiana to donate Hodge’s Gardens as a new state park. The state assumed control in 2007 of the facility that included fishing, canoeing, camping, hiking, and formal gardens around a 225-acre crescent-shaped lake. The contract included a provision that the state park would keep its original name, and would receive sufficient funding to remain in good working order.

However, it wasn’t long before the State’s budget for the park started running dry, and the state was no longer able to continue maintaining the park. Thus, on October 1, 2017, the State of Louisiana was compelled to return the administration of Hodges Gardens to its original owners, the A.J. and Nona Triggs Hodges Foundation. Since the state park’s closure, at least two proposals were made to meet the financial demands of keeping the park open to the public, but neither was successful.

Today, despite the best efforts of owners, officials, and volunteers, Hodges Gardens still remain closed with no current plans for reopening.
