Join us in celebrating National Hispanic Heritage month with a special performance by the University of South Florida’s Chamber Singers.

The Chamber Singers will perform a program of choral music celebrating Hispanic composers and Hispanic folk genres from a variety of Latin American countries. Led by their new director, Dr. David Gomez, they will present a program celebrating the rich musical heritage of Latin American music. The ensemble and their director look forward to seeing you at this free event celebrating Hispanic heritage.

Allyssa Jones | USF Director of Vocal Ensembles

Ms. Allyssa Jones (she/her), is the Director of Vocal Ensembles at University of South Florida (USF) where she leads Blue Mood (jazz vocal ensemble), the touring ensemble, and Honors College Choir. An alumna of Adelphi University (B.S. Music Education) and Northern Illinois University (M.M. Music Education), she studied with baritone Robert Sims, soprano Jayne West, conductor Larry Newland and composer Judith Lang Zaimont. Her creative credits include five solo recordings as a singer-songwriter, over 35 theatrical productions as a composer, music director and sound designer, and commissioned works for professional artists and pedagogical projects, including soprano Denise Bird and youth strings organization Make Music NOLA.

Formerly the Program Director for Performing Arts for Boston Public Schools and Music Faculty at Boston Arts Academy, Jones is known for championing student choice, voice and identity in music pedagogy and performance. Currently the Chair of the NAfME Council for Innovations, her service record includes the Institute for Composer Diversity (Head of Outreach), Cultural Connections by Design (Board Member), the Massachusetts MEA-Eastern District (inaugural Advocacy and Outreach Chair), ACDA Massachusetts (Jazz Chair), the NAfME Perspectives Group (co-facilitator), andthe Handel + Haydn Society (Education Planning Team). Her work as a conductor and choral clinician includes the Pinellas County Schools Ignite Festival (Clinician), Florida Vocal Association District 11 MPA (Clinician), Massachusetts MEA Northeast District Honor Choir (Conductor), Boston Children’s Chorus (Guest Conductor), Worldstrides Heritage Festivals (Adjudicator/Clinician), and numerous schools and community arts organization across New England and in Greater Tampa Bay.


David Gomez | Assistant Director of Vocal Ensembles

Dr. David Gomez is a faculty member at the University of South Florida’s School of Music in the role of Assistant Director of Vocal Ensembles. He leads the University Singers and Chamber Singers ensembles. Dr. Gomez has deep experience directing an array of music programs encompassing K-12, community, sacred, collegiate, and professional levels. He also has experience working across prestigious musical institutions such as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, and in leading important music programs at the New York City All-City Choir, Brooklyn Borough-Wide Chorus, the Brooklyn-Queens Conservatory, The Stamford Chorale, the First Congregational Church of Stamford, the New York City Summer Arts Institute, the University of Oklahoma, Five Towns College, and now at the University of South Florida. Additionally, he led international music festivals in the US, UK, Spain, and Austria, including collaboration with the London International Choral Festival and the Madrid Choral Festival.

Dr. Gomez’s experience includes leadership and management roles in the global classical music industry in which he has particular skills in managing diverse artist relations, identifying new classical music talent, developing relationships, coordinating with boards, patrons, and stakeholders, raising funding, managing budgets, designing and executing music programs, and promoting large-scale events across traditional and digital media platforms. He is an American and Spanish citizen and speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian. He holds a unique academic research focused on music throughout the Spanish-speaking world. A native of New York and Spain, he has studied across Latin America and Europe, including earning a Fulbright Scholarship to study the music of Vivaldi in Venice, and a full scholarship to complete a Doctorate in Conducting at the University of Oklahoma where he fused his New York urban and European cosmopolitan musical experiences with new pedagogical perspectives from the Southwestern United States. His unique experiences give him a deep understanding of a myriad of cultures and perspectives, which permit him to infuse his work with an outlook that few others have.
